Location: Victorias City, Philippines
Status: Completion 2021
Type: Master Plan
A designer’s task is to synthesize our evolving society’s disparate needs and desires into cohesive, multidimensional design solutions. The ecological industrial park (EIP) model is an innovative urban design system at the convergence of environmental sustainability and productive economic development practices. EIPs are industrial parks in which businesses cooperate to reduce waste and pollution, efficiently share resources, and activate sustainable development to increase economic gains and improve environmental quality. A successful EIP relies on balancing the political and geographical potentials of a site to facilitate symbiotic harmony between people and place.
The project site for ‘Energetic Symbiosis for Victorias’ will be the first EIP in the Philippines. The design for 435 ha of land between the Northern Negros National Park and Guimaras considers the site’s existing wetlands conditions and uses its geography to introduce new development. The zones of sustainable industry, residential development, education, and innovation are organized and connected along the preserved ecological corridors. Of the new development, 61% will focus on sustainability, specifically on biofuel and renewable energy production.
The ‘Energetic Symbiosis for Victoria’ offers the potential to invigorate and inspire a culture of vibrant sustainable innovation, enhanced education, social wellness, and increased economic prosperity through cooperation between many facets of society.
